As reported to the Worthing & District League AGM last Thursday, Matt Page our League Secretary passed away in the early hours of Sunday 17th May.
He lost his battle with his cancer and the end came quite quickly. He was aware of the terminal nature of his illness and had accepted what would happen with amazing good grace. He had suggested that we should find someone to shadow him over the summer and be ready take over as League Secretary when necessary.
J.J.Craig of Littlehampton B.C. had offered to do this but Matt’s death came too soon for any shadowing to take place. We are grateful to J.J. in agreeing to take Matt’s role now on a permanent basis. With amazing timing Matt was able to see the season completed and was able to do what was necessary for the AGM.
I think I was one of the last of the badminton community to see him as I went to his home to take him to the Brighton League AGM on 14th May. He was not well enough to travel but gave me the league tables to take to the meeting. It shows how conscientious he was. I find it hard to believe that he only had three days left.
Matt’s contribution to badminton in the area was massive. He was League Secretary for both the Worthing and Brighton Leagues. In these roles he dealt efficiently with all the issues that arise from administering the matches and producing the tables on a regular basis.
He has left a legacy of a successful badminton club, Club Foot. This club has focussed on young people and we wish the club well for the future.
His other role was to regularly assist Chris Byerley with the children at the Saturday morning sessions at Worthing Leisure Centre.
We are exceedingly grateful for what Matt achieved for badminton and particularly young players in his short Life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
